Very easily done .. simply use your favourite kernel config program and set
up the following:
prompt for experimental stuff (code maturity) = yes
	under 'Console Drivers', select:
		'Support for frame buffer devices'
		'VESA VGA Graphics Console'
		'Advanced low level driver options'
		'Monochrome support'
		'2 bpp packed pixels support'
		'4 bpp packed pixels support'
		'8 bpp packed pixels support'
		'16 bpp packed pixels support'
		'24 bpp packed pixels support'
		'32 bpp packed pixels support'
		'VGA character/attributes support'

Compile the kernel, put it into LILO, make sure LILO has 'vga=ask' either
globally or for this kernel.
Reboot, choose the new kernel, and when the mode selection comes up hit
RETURN and give it a mode of 0317

Watch in delight as the system boots with the full screen, and Tux the
penguin sitting at the top.

Have a lot of fun...
