Many thanks to all the people - too numerous to mention individually -
who helped me with my problems in installing Linux on a ThinkPad 385XD.
 After a couple of false starts I have managed to install Caldera
OpenLinux (from the SAMS Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours book). 

I'm not quite finished yet, and still cannot get the external monitor
to work.
