0317 means 1024x768x16bit.  Try 0305 = 1024x768x8bit.  I have the 770Z
with the SXGA screen.  I found that using mode 031A, 1280x1024x16bit,
act strange, but using mode 0307, 1280x1024x8bit, X works fine.  And X
still runs in 16-bit color, even though I'm using an 8-bit VESA mode.
So you might want to try mode 0305.

To max the memory, you'll need two 128MB SODIMMs, for a total of 320MB.
