Ok, I'm not really a newbie on the list, I've been watching the =
correspondence to and fro. but I am a newbie with linux

Here's my setup.

ThinkPad 760cd 40Meg Ram 1.2 G hard drive.

Got RH 6.0 Running with KDE in 800 x 600 mode thanks to a friend who =
also has a TP760CD.

My HDD I set up as follows

/dos 300 Meg (just enough for Win 95 & MSorifice 97)

/ ~ 100 meg
/usr ~ 600 meg =20
/swap =3D 100 meg
/var =3D rest of drive (why do we need var? )

I figure if I can lose all attachments with M$ then I am on my way. =20

What I wanted from my Comp>

Dial up Networking
Netscape
Word processing / Spreadsheets
Java, C ++ and C development.

I got Dial up networking going thanks to kppp
Netscape worked a charm once I found the install file and installed it =
(Oh yes. and the proxy!! important)
StarOffice 5. Hmm.

I downloaded this. Put on CD - all 68 meg of it.

I Untarred it and installed it. Only 137 meg which used up the rest of =
my space on /usr

But it seems like KDE runs like a DOG with 1 leg!! Has anyone else =
got a similar setup?

I find that KDE is too unbearably slow, and so I uninstalled the =
staroffice, didn't make too much difference.

Is anyone else got similar setup with fast response from X windows? =20

Also - has anyone used SO exclusively? Is it good?

I also have a copy of Corel WP 8. I don't know whether to give this a =
go instead.

Cheers. Jake.
