| ctrl-alt-backspace works, but the point is, that by ctrl-alt-f1 and then
| suspending, my desktop is saved. So I resume, do ctrl-alt-f7 and
| continue to work at the same point where I stopped.

If you enable console framebuffer support, you won't even have to do
that.  I just unplug the power cord and close the lid, and when I reopen
it the machine resumes, with no X lockup problems.
