Here's my setup for my 600:

i.e. no one prevents you from specifiying both. I have to switch modes back
and forth with ctrl-alt-plus/minus when attaching a projector or monitor in
most cases, though. IBM apparently tried to be smart about the video chip
wiring... :-)
