Out of curiosity, can you mount /dev/hda2 ro? If you do, what's on it?
I have one thing left to try, which is juggling the partitions again so
that hda4 and hda2 swap their partition data, which is, at least in
theory, a safe operation :) [well, I've done it once, why not tempt
fate...]

I would guess that your hibernate stuff still works because the partition
is ~ 262 Mb in size, which I'm guessing is big enough to accomodate
256Mb sys memory + a bit - 256Mb being the max memory for that model,
iirc. I guess they just ship it with a partition big enough to take the
lot - maybe the bios inists the hibernate partition be that size. ANother
thing for me to try. Oh well.
