I have a workaround for you.
I had the same problem and dealt with it by switching to 32 bit color
mode. Flicker is not perceptible in that mode, but obviously things are
a bit slower than they should be.
On top of that xmms distorts mp3s when i move windows around.

Maybe I'll look at bills 3.3.1 code and see what he did to fix this at 
lower color depth and see if i can see what happened to it in 3.3.6.
