I had the same problem im my laptop.
I'd tried to install all the other distributions with no success.
I put the problem in several lists whith no solution...

The solution:
I had to recompile the kernel. When I did it, I also remove the things I
did'n need to use - to get a smaller kernel.

after that the problem went away...

I had to install linux in others laptops getting the same problem in all
of them. and the recompilation works for all of them.

My configuration:IBM ethernet II pcmcia card, 28.8 IBM pcmcia modem and
thinkpad 760EL.

In my opinion this is a pre-compiled kernel problem.

PS: The distributions whith kernel 2.0.xx work fine.
