I noticed the same problem with version 4.0, a "workaround" of sorts is to
drop the machine to console with control+alt+f1. The display will then
blank with fcn f3 etc, when you want it back just hit alt+f7

I have a ThinkPad 770ed with slackware 7 and compiled version 4 myself, I
found the speed to be better then 3.x but had the server panic twice.
Because of the panics and the screen blank issue I compiled 3.3.6 and am
happier with it(it has never crashed)
