By accident I finally figured out how to get the XFree86 4.0.1 driver up
and running. It seems like with 4.0.1 actually a whole set of drivers
(all?) are integrated in one file. At least the Trident chip of
my TP-770X is supported this way. In /etc/X11 I have placed the
following symlink:

   X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

'startx' no reads the '/etc/X11/XF86Config-4' configuration
file. Results so far are very good.
