Is this problem only occuring when your friend is offline? If this is
the case, he should try to comment out all name servers in
/etc/resolv.conf. If that's not sufficient, he should also remove all
news servers in the netscape configuration and specify 127.0.0.1 as a
default news server (even if it isn't one).
