Issues come about with kernels lower than 2.2.18 release and the 3Com
MiniPCI Nic/Modem.
You need release 2.2.18 (not the installation kernel in any of the
distributions I am aware of. I have seen 2.2.18pre* but that won't work.

I was able to install debian potato over the network with a PCMCIA nic,
and then download the kernel source for 2.2.18.
Here is the /etc/modules off my T21 running debian. I am sure you can
adapt this if you are running some other distro.
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a #, and everything on the line after them are ignored.
parport
parport_pc
parport_probe
smbfs
ntfs
usb-uhci
mousedev
usbmouse
thinkpad
smapi
superio
rtcmosram
3c59x
cs46xx
ipv6

I installed tputils, and put this line in my startup so the laptop
wouldn't try to go to sleep on me when I closed the lid. The OSS sound
driver and NIC driver REALLY don't like being suspended.

tpctl --pm-sedation-lid-closure=-

Hope this helps.

PS: According to a post by 3com about the MiniPCI card I seen on this
list's archives, the lucent driver WONT WORK on the 3com cards. Period.
