Fair enough - although it's not a always there [user must install tpctl],
the existence of /proc/thinkpad woulld indicate... wait, what am I saying: 

Surely some of the code in the tpctl modules will contain some [possibly
non canonical] way of determining whether you're on a thinkpad?
