Just what do you mean by "corruption"?  Corrupted file?  Or the
font is not elligible for an unknown reason?  I'm running the same
machine and X v4.0.2 and never experienced this problem.  BTW, the
"fixed" font should be an alias to something like
"-misc-fixed-blah-blah" (on my box it's
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1).
