Anyone know how to get ppp compression enabled with kppp?

The throughput monitor on kppp does'nt seem to show a transfer rate
greater than my connect speed (usually 44000, ~4.4k/sec).

Compressed file transfers seem OK, but when I am downloading
large html pages or even large text files it still shows only ~4.4k
transfer rate where I would expect to reap some compression
benefit.

I am using a 56k pcmcia modem. I've tried various init strings
to ensure modem compression is enabled (i.e, %C3 etc...)

This is on a 600e with Red Hat 7.1
