[CF]  I had a similar problem installing Debian on my 1200.
The only way to solve was to reboot typing "linux single" at the Lilo
prompt, removing all PCMCIA-related packages with dpkg and the reboot again.
Trying to analyse the situation, I think it could be a matter of conflict
between PCMCIA and USB.
