Hi Yannick,

On my iSeries 1200 1161-41G I had the same problem and the only way I could
find was to copy the base system of my Debian distribution on the WinMe
partition, make a WinMe rescue disk and boot from it, and then start
installation from the batch file.

I tried many distro, including Red Hat 7.0, Corel 1.0, Slackware 7.0, Best
Linux and Debian 2.2 and none of them booted right from the Cdrom. Only a
rescue disk made from my Slackware desktop system ends with the proceeding
prompt, but of course I can't mount a root partition which doesn't exist!

So I think that:
1. The booting problem could be due a missing built-in feature of the kernel
(that's why the Slackware rescue disk works, after all)
2. It could be the opposite problem too: maybe a wrong built-in feature
confuses the kernel (say the scsi driver for instance)

Once installed the linux box, the cdrom works right, so the IDE controller
(and driver) should have no problem.

Please let me know if you are able to get the winmodem to work. Remember
it's *not* a lucent one (even if the WinMe control panel says so). APM, USB
(with kernel 2.4.0) and soundcard (Intel i810 chip) works fine.

Cesare.
