I was never able to change the screen resolution successfully using
XFree86 3.3 (which is what RH 6.2 has). I can switch to 640x480 using
XFree86 4 (which is what RH 7.1 has).  Because turning on NumLk just to
switch resolutions is such a pain, I use KDE2 to map Ctrl-Alt-/ to run
"xvidtune -next".  (Note that the / key becomes KP+ when NumLk is on.)

Try creating a second XF86Config named "/etc/XF86Config.640" that
defines a 640x480 screen.  When you need to connect to the projector,
start up a second instance of X by running this command:

    X :1 -xf86config /etc/XF86Config.640

If you have the same experience I had, you'll only be able to see the
screen image on the projector, not on your TP screen.
