I use noflushd 2.3 (http://noflushd.sourceforge.net (?)) that I fixed a
little bit to work with 2.4 kernels. It stops the HD after a user defined
period without disk reads. While the HD is down, noflushd prevents the update
daemon from flushing the file system cache back to disk. This works
perfectly, the HD will stop for ours if I write some LaTeX docs with XEmacs
and view it with Kdvi. I haven't disabled any stuff like cron or atime
updates. I also use a selfmade script in /etc/apm/event.d/ (Debian) that
changes the spin down timeout of noflushd to 10 seconds if running on battery
and 5 minutes if running on AC power.

Note: noflushd won't work with neither ReiserFS nor SGI XFS.
