Phil,

I have been working on this off-and-on for quite some time, primarily
trying to get our engineering team in Japan to study it and determine
whether we're deviating from an industry standard, or whether lm_sensors
is making inappropriate assumptions about the components attached to the
PIIX4 bus. Here is the only information of consequence that I've received
from them. I was waiting for them to provide better detail; but in absense
of that, I'm releasing what I have.

>>
During configuration phase of install lm_sensor, it asks what I2C
controller chip used.
It detects PIIX4, but actually thermal sensors aren't on the bus of PIIX4.
 A flash ROM is on
the PIIX4 bus instead.

Thermal sensors are on the bus of H8. But, I'm not sure, lm_sensor does
not handle
H8 as a I2C bus controller.
If this is true, lm_sensor should have ThinkPad unique control code, I
think.
<<

In response to your note, I've asked the engineering team to contact you
directly. Feel free to continue e-mailing me directly if you don't feel
that progress is being made, or if you need me to be aware of any
particular status.

I'm attempting to escalate this issue internally to get more attention
placed on it. It's been unresolved for far too long.

Subject: Lm_sensors & Thinkpads

Hello, I'm a developer with Lm_sensors. We occationally are notified
of Thinkpad users installing Lm_sensors on their Thinkpads with
disasterous results. We have yet to get any technical feedback on a
history of events or the hardware involved. Looking through the
linux-thinkpad mailing list, it looked as if you were going to look
into this issue (from the IBM-side of things).

Is there anything we can do to provide assistance? I'd be interested
in the address and chip # of the eeprom in question. Assuming I can
get the datasheet, it would give us a clue as to what sorts of scans
that make the chip write data to it's self.

Thanks!

Phil
