I'm using the following in my /etc/lilo.conf:

[baiti@blackbox baiti]$ cat /etc/lilo.conf
append="ramdisk_size=0 hdc=cdrom video=vesa:mtrr,ywrap"
vga=0x33b

With this setting I can switch from X to the VCs and I can also
terminate X and be back in a working console. Still I don't consider
this a solution to the problems at hand. Let me make one example: I am
packaging my own little distribution which completely boots off of one
CD and it is built such that it could be used in (ideally) any PC
without ever loading anything onto the disk. In such a scenario I can
obviously not hardcode any such vga settings into the bootup. Ultimately
switching into VCs from X and terminating X to be back on a visible
console _must_ work without playing such tricks.

The setup (circumvention, not solution) works for me also with an
external monitor attached, however, the Fn-F7 is still only a 2-way
toggle. Either I see a display on the LCD or on the external monitor but
never on both. Obviously also _not_ an acceptable solution in many
presentation environments as you as the presenter are not supposed to
look at the wall to see what you present.
