Just want to give you an update on our famous topic: Due to the disk
going bad on my T21 I had to reinstall RH 7.1 from scratch. I am not
aware of doing anything different than just about a week ago, however,
all of a sudden 'vlc' works on my machine with 'Xvideo' output (!). As I
said, I have no idea what is different. Perhaps one hint which I don't
fully understand myself yet: With the old installation I was able to
play .mpegs with xmms except that I could only see blue and/or green
garbage in the window and I got similar output with 'vlc'. Now with
the newly installed RH 7.1, I cannot even start playing mpegs with xmms,
mpeg files are just skipped from mixed mp3/mpeg play lists. It seems
like xmms is looking for some library which I happened to had installed
in the old RH 7.1 and now it seems to be missing _but_ now I can watch
DVD with 'vlc'. Any ideas? Here is what xmms uses:

[root@blackbox doc]# ldd /usr/bin/xmms
