Hi,

I installed RH 7.2, as far as I can say I am close to totaly new to =
Linux. I can't get sound through sndconfig, and I really have no clue of =
what's (not) going on.

Following the documentation, I log as root and run sndconfig. The PNP =
detection does not see my card ("No PnP or PCI sound cards were found in =
your system..."). In the menu, I select "Crystal CS423x sound chip". I =
manually pass the values I got from Windows 98 ("dual-boot as long as =
you don't master the power of Linux"): I/O Port=3D0x530, IRQ=3D10, =
DMA1=3D1, DMA2=3D0, MPU I/O=3D0x300, MPU IRQ=3D9.=20
I press OK. The screen stays all blue (background screen for Sound =
Configuration Utility 0.65.2 for about 5 or 6 seconds then displays: =
"Sound Card Test", "A sample sound will now be played...". I press OK. =
The screen stays again all blue for about 5-6 seconds and then displays: =

"modprobe error"
"The following error occured running the modprobe program:
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o:=20
init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: insmod=20
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.7-10/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: insmod
sound-slot-0 failed"

I tried using a generic soundblaster driver (and other drivers) and got =
the same kind of messages, but with one difference: there is not the 5 =
to 6 seconds wait before failure, I have an immediate failure message. =
Like when trying to load the cs4232.o module, it really finds some =
hardware but fails to activate it...

Reading a bit more lead me to displying used ressources. cat =
/proc/ioports gave:
0000-001f : dma1
0020-003f : pic1
0040-005f : timer
0060-006f : keyboard
0070-007f : rtc

And cat /dev/interrupts gave:
           CPU0      =20
  0:     155197          XT-PIC  timer
  1:       1486          XT-PIC  keyboard

NMI:          0=20
ERR:          0

The cat /proc/dma only gave: " 4: cascade"

SO I tried again with non conflicting settings (the mpuio port at 0x300 =
conflicts with the net card): I tried several, here is one:
I/O Port=3D0x530, IRQ=3D10, DMA1=3D1, DMA2=3D0, MPU I/O=3D0x330, MPU =
IRQ=3D9
Everytime the sound test starts, I have a 5 to 6 seconds of "wait" =
before I get the same exact error message: "modprobe error", with the =
same exact content as reported above.

At last, I removed all PC cards from the machine and started linux. I =
went to check used interrupts, dma and ioports. I tried several =
settings, including the very exact same as on Windows 98: I/O =
Port=3D0x530, IRQ=3D10, DMA1=3D1, DMA2=3D0, MPU I/O=3D0x300, MPU =
IRQ=3D9.
 Still no luck, still the same error message. I played with some =
settings and got no further luck.

I found references to "sndconfig --noprobe", but if I can select my =
soundcard, I am not offer any option to enter ressources manually and =
directly jump to the Sound Card Test page, which fails. I found document =
reference to a --noautoconfig option that either was removed in my =
version of sndconfig or that is not working.

Please assist me to start sound.
