I believe the hidden partition contains a copy of the install image/recovery
cd, for quick re-installs. Sometimes they don't even ship the CD anymore,
they are getting cheap.

Subject: [ltp] RedHat 7.1 on IBM ThinkPad T23 model 2647-CB1

Hi All,

Just buy a ThinkPad T23 type/model 2647-CB1. I will work on Linux as my
primary
environment but also with Win98 as a backup (as my T23 come with Win98
license).
Some problems:

1.	No tech spec at IBM websites regarding this particular type/model !!!

From the Win98SE system configuration report:

	CDROM :-	TEAC CD-224E
Display :-	IBM ThinkPad LCD 1024x768
Network :-	IBM High Rate Wireless LAN Mini PCI Combo Card
			Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection
			Lucent Technologies Soft Modem AMR
Sound :-	Crystal WDM Audio Codec
	Graphics :-	S3 Graphics Inc SuperSavage/IXC SDR
	Disk :- IBM DJSA-220 (PM)

2.	With the RedHat 7.1 installation CD, I use fdisk repartition the disk:

Device	Start End Blocks ID	System
	------	-----	----	-------- --	------------------------
	hda1 1 555 4195768 c	Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
	hda2 556 660 793800 1c	Hidden Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
	hda3 661 799 1050840 83	Linux native
	hda4 800	2584	13494600 5	Extended
	hda5 800	2464	12587368 83	Linux native
	hda6 2465	2499 264568 82	Linux swap
	hda7 2500	2584 642568 c	Win95 FAT32 (LBA)

I create hda2 as the original/factory default is:

Device	Start End Blocks ID	System
	------	-----	----	-------- --	------------------------
	hda1 1	2478	18733648 c	Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
	hda2	2479	2584 801360 1c	Hidden Win95 FAT32 (LBA)

hda2 cannot be seen from Win98SE ... what its purpose ?

3.	Then I install Win98SE from fresh using the recovery CD.

4.	After that I install RedHat 7.1 with

	/dev/hda3 as /boot
	/dev/hda5 as /
	/dev/hda6 as swap

The installation proceed in X (i.e. the installation GUI detect my
	graphic controller automatically).

However, after the prompt for enable/disable Xconfiguration auto
-detection if I select enable then the display off and nothing display
forever. Then I start over again without auto-detect enabled.

5.	RedHat 7.1 is successfull installed in text mode. The the ethernet not
automatically pumpup (ifconfig -a didn't display the interface) even I
use netconfig to config eth0 to use DHCP.

Any links for reference and suggestion ?

Thanks,

Kelvin.
