iirc, the OS on the thinkpad can't use all the memory - a small chunk is
reserved by the bios, or something, and the OS shouldn't write to that -
Presumably memtest86 bypasses the usual methods and writes directly to the
memory in some way [I'm theorising wildly here :)] and will therefore bork
your machine.
