That is at least one of my problems.  Here are my module loads and the
corresponding messages:

thinkpad:
Aug  8 16:40:54 tp600x kernel: thinkpad: I have registered to handle
major: 10 minor: 170.

smapi:
Aug  8 16:41:15 tp600x kernel: smapi: 32-bit protected mode SMAPI BIOS
found. :-)

rtcmosram:
Aug  8 16:41:33 tp600x kernel: rtcmosram: I/O ports for RT CMOS RAM not
available, but ignoring this.
