The only issue I've ever had with a Mandrake issued kernel was the famous 
"trackpoint bug" that plagued 8.0 where the stock kernel would refuse to talk 
to trackpoints because of some stupid PS/2 patch Mandrake applied.

Really the only annoying thing I've found about patched kernels in general is 
they often don't accept OTHER patches. So you find some lovely patch you 
really need, and you can't just apply it to your distribution's kernel 
sources. 

In any case I never had any problem running a stock kernel with Mandrake 
either, but you sometimes do loose minor features, and performance can suffer 
as well. On the flip side if you're a real kernel hacker you can probably 
build a better kernel for your system than any distributer can...
