I think that these must be different connectors!

The 760 has a horrid plastic "lump" which sticks out so far it is asking 
to be levered off, and mates with 4 pins in this configuration:

          X      X

            X  X

I think they are 0,+5V,+12V,control signals. Can one buy these as spare 
from IBM?

 From your post, I assume that the 600 has the more common "2.5 mm power 
plug" which is a standard part you can get in radio shack/elsewhere, and 
has only 2 connectors. (OV, +15V usually ). That would be the same as 
most laptops, including the A series and the 770 series.
