I just tonight hooked my 3xe to my 770 using Jpilot.  It requires the pilot-link 
package to function, perhaps K-pilot does also?  All I had to do was install 
jpilot and pilot-link.  The pilot-link man page has you make a pilot device by 
(as root) 'ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/pilot', then make the serial port user 
writeable by  'chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0'.  I started jpilot and it synced first try.
