AFAIK, Mandrake 8.1 is based on Red Hat 7.2.  If Mandrake doesn't work,
it
seems unlikely that Red Hat will either.

I suspect you have an IRQ conflict (especially because you mention
PCMCIA).
You might look at your BIOS IRQ assignments - try changing the
assignments.

You can also try booting to Failsafe mode, run sndconfig, see the
messages.
