I dont think its a substitute for a second hard drive. I definitely need 
a second hard drive that will be dedicated to Win XP (in the unlikely 
event that I need to use the software that came with the pre-install).

But it is a substitute for having to use a commercial partitioning 
software that can handle NTFS. I dont plan on having any NTFS partitions 
in the drive that will have linux. Hence the partitioning applications 
that come with distributions such as Mandrake (fips, drakX) will suffice.

I dont think so (and not according to the IBM tech support person).
