Because he's using the middle button for scroll wheel emulation.  I
assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that this would prevent the X server from
allowing the middle button to also serve its normal function.  Do you
know whether the middle button still reports Button-2 events when it's
configured from wheel emulation?
