For what it's worth, my Thinkpad 380XD's been run without a battery for 6
months with no ill effects.  I use it basically like a very portable
desktop machine.

If you remember to hibernate the computer rather than suspend it, it works
out quite well.  Haven't "rebooted" in ages...
