My number one suggestion would be Get a PC mounting kit so you can plug
your 2 1/2 inch disk into a desktop machine with a nice steady power
supply etc. They cost about 15 pounds for the ribbon cable and power
lead... Also it can be the slave drive so you don't need it for the os, if
there are corrupted sectors atleast you could dd most of the data off etc.

Laptops have alot of wacky harware in them, not very good as a
diagonistics platform.
