[ltp] sound card problems on 770

Bought a used 770 Thinkpad a few weeks back. I'm generally very happy with it.

The Linux install (RH 8.0) went smoothly and everything was fine. I had to use
/sbin/sndconfig to set up the sound card, but no problem there...

The problem with the sound card is that every time I boot up, the sound card
settings change, and the changes don't work. I can again use /sbin/sndconfig
to fix the settings, but the problem will inevitably recur on the next bootup.
Apparently anaconda wrongly detects the sound card type and screws up the
settings.

How can I prevent this?
