If you browse through the July archive of the XPert mailing list 
(http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2002-July/thread.html), you will 
see a number of posts in response to my query pertaining to the same 
types of issues you are concerned with.

One of the responses by Hy0, sent me his modified XFree driver which 
allows me to have simultaneous External/LCD displays at 1400x1050. He 
hasnt released any source code (not even to the CVS) yet. Your best bet 
is to email him and get his modified drivers.
