Easiest thing to do to set up the sound under Redhat 7.3 is write down the
settings (use PS2.EXE booted from a DOS partition or from a floppy disk). 
You can then use sndconfig to set up the sound card.  On my 600 (no E,
but the setup on an E I tried once was identical), I used (for the cs4232
driver):

io=0x530 irq=5 mpuirq=9 dma2=0 dma=1 mpuio=0x300 

No kernel recompile necessary.  No tpctl necessary either, as I have
never been able to get it to do anything useful. :)
