Do you have the "Quick Boot" Bios option enabled?  Try to disable it. 
It keeps the bios from doing the pnp setup itself.  I had some serious
hangs with alsa after using the dos ps2 utility.

Thomas:  Do the new kernels finally handle the pnp stuff in a reliable
