[ltp] slow boot with hibernation file

I used the stndalhd.exe program from IBM to put a hibernation file on my
T21 with Redhat 7.3.

When I boot, the laptop accesses the hard disk solidly for about two
minutes, then the lilo menu appears.

When I rename the hibernation file, this doesn't happen - there's a
brief pause and then the lilo menu appears.

Does anyone know what is happening?

Sequence:
Power on
view IBM splash screen
receive prompt for start up password, enter it and press return
begin long pause - no activity except solid hard disk access light
system boots, lilo menu appears
