Ah, you're running linux...

One thing I've experimented with, if you have the disk space... use "dd"
to suck the entire .iso file system image off of the dvd.  Then use the
loopfs filesystem to mount the result, and point "mplayer" at that.

Dunno if that will thrash the batter more or less than the dvd...
