so, whats the problem with that?

vfat is compatible with msdos, as shorter unique names should be visible 
for 8.3 only users (as you may have hard times to tell which is what file).

If you don't write files to that card and only read pictures of a 
cf-card, there is no problem, either.

And if you use the cf as a bigger floppy (as I do) you WANT to have the
longer filenames, with which at least W2K has no problem.

So I see no problem using vfat.
