It's known as "SLIP" (serial line IP). Try the SLIP-HOWTO.html
You might also want to look at ppp (point-to-point protocol).

Seriously, you should buy a network card :-) A network card will be at 
least 200 x faster, and usually about $30 for PCMCIA, and $10 for PCI/ISA
