Hi,
 Below may be the reason of your 3D problem on Thinkpad-T30:
     In some XFree86 versions , the DRI has a bug.  
When the CPU is better than P4 1.8G (just like T30), 
the DRI will mistakenly enable the 3D-NOW! feature for the CPU.

Of course, the P4 CPU has no 3D-NOW! at all!
So ,when you use some 3D programs.....
It won't work ,and return "illegal instructions"

To avoid this problem, you can edit /etc/profile ,
And add a line  “export MESA_NO_3DNOW=1”
That’s OK.
