Lewis,

Have you used the IBM Configuration Utility (available on their 
website) to confirm that you have 1) the serial port enabled and 2) 
the infrared port disabled? They will conflict with each other. If 
the serial port is enabled then check out 
http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO-9.html on using mknod 
to add a device.
