calling it the question of the year seems a bit much, but:
I'm suspecting the tpctl supplied with SuSE 9.0 isn't up to date.  After I 
installed it from the CDs, it took 2 reboots before linux was working 
smoothly again, and I haven't been able to locate any command which turns on 
the wlan radio.
