That's the root of the problem. When I remove the clockmod driver, the
kernel starts using the centrino driver, which can use frequencies
between 1500 and 600 MHz. I had assumed that Linux chooses the most
appropriate driver on its own. Thank you very much Alex!

Also, the battery-under-ACPI issue has disappeared. I simply forgot to
uncomment the battery line from /etc/modules. :-|

Everything besides shutting the system down and standby modes works
properly now. I'll install a test11 kernel now and see if that helps.
