[ltp] sound card mixing

Hello
  Haw can I configure my sound card or devices for play more than one 
sound at the same time.
  For example if I'm runing 'mplayer' I can't run in the same time 
'xmms', he tool me that "can't open
audio".
  There is a problem in the devices (/dev/dsp and /dev/mixer)  or what 
can I do ??
