i used to use my TimePort... plug in the cable, then plug into your laptop 
(i also used a Targus PCMCIA serial I/O adapter and USB->Serial I/O)...

you may have to use the setserial command to ensure accurate bps settings 
(spd_norm or spd_hi? can't remember)...

i've since moved on to a Kyocera w/Verizon (115200 vs 19200 on Sprint)... 
works just as well!
