What does xset q say about your "auto repeating keys"?  Mine says this:

  auto repeating keys:  00ffffffdffffbbf
                        fa9fffffffdffdff
                        ffffffffffffffff
                        ffffffffffffffff

If yours is all zeroes, then that's the problem.
